The Heritage of Princely Travancore
Avenue Kowdiar, positioned at the very doorstep of Kerala's power center, the
Raj Bhavan, is more than its enviable street address; it's a leading pillar of
civility that offers refined accommodations merged with rich heritage for its
discerning clientele.
History
Avenue Kowdiar is a handsome art deco landmark and is an integral
part of the heritage and history of the old princely state of Travancore. The
house, formed part of the prestigious 28-acre Belhaven Hills, during the 18th
century, with Belhaven Palace as the centerpiece. In the late-1880s, Belhaven
Palace was the place where European residents in Travancore used to meet and
socialize. In 1902, the then Maharaja of Travancore, HH Sree Moolam Thirunal
purchased this exquisite property for his Royal Consort Vadasseri Ammachi,
Panapillai Amma Srimathi Lakshmi Pillai Karthiani Pillai Kochamma.
"Avenue Kowdiar" was built in this "Bel heaven Hills" during the middle of last
century! The house changed a few hands and is is now owned by a Trivandrum-based
family who revamped it from a conservation perspective, restoring the heritage
personality of the building and its environs with complete appreciation of the
historic character of the broader Kowdiar-Belhaven area.
